SATW Institute Seminar:  Marketing in the Modern Age

I'll be presenting this seminar and engaging in ongoing instruction and camaraderie with students during this intensive weekend in Orlando, January 9-11, 2009.

Marketing in the Modern Age
With the continuing fragmentation of media, it’s not enough to send out a press release to announce the debut of your latest work.  As a savvy writer, you need to create a brand, develop platforms, and assemble a toolbox of marketing strategies. While time-honored methods like public speaking, book signings, and radio interviews still work, the Internet has brought us a flurry of new tools for promoting ourselves and our work. Build your brand and stake your claim on topics you have a passion for by developing niche websites and blogs. Give yourself an ongoing platform by becoming part of a focused online community in blogs, forums, and social media sites. Be your own broadcaster by developing podcasts and vidcasts that complement and promote your work, or create a new spin on an old movie tradition—a book trailer. And sell yourself by providing downloadable content, promotional products, and galleries where your audience can buy your work. Writers have more options for marketing than ever before, but with such a cornucopia of choices, where do you start?  By developing your own marketing plan that sets your focus and provides a sense of direction on which tools in the toolbox are worth your time and effort.
